BIG NEWS : He has opened his eyes, he is awake!! 

Thursday I had a phone meeting w/ the care team and during that phone call they had mentioned that he has been more alert. I didn’t know what that entirely meant, until today with my own two eyes! He opened his eyes, I got close to him and I could tell he had tears! That is emotion, that is his heart speaking, that connection is there!

After a month, this has been the biggest sign of HIM being SOKNY HEEP!! In addition :

• Sokny has been more alert and is utilizing his eyes to track individuals as they walk across the room. 

• He has shown response to his name, by opening and closing his eyes. 

• He even is moving this head left and right ever so slightly.

• They will try and introduce physical therapy x3 a week

• They will begin respiratory therapy and begin with changes to his ventilator & weaning.

• He is in the process of receiving a wheel chair so he can be taken out of his room within the facility.

SOKNY WILL RISE! 

A few weeks have passed since our last update and while some things remain the same, some things have changed. 

Status: Sokny has not had major changes with his current condition. He continues to suffer from myoclonic jerks that require anti- seize medication, is in need of heavy ventilator support and also around the clock care. We are still trying to navigate through any response to stimuli, but that has been unsuccessful. Even though not much has changed, we continue to try. 

The change: After about a month in the ICU, he was finally okayed by the Dr. to be transferred to a facility that can take care and provide him with the support he needs. He was successfully transported Monday, June 29, late in the afternoon. 

With Sokny being in a new facility, at this current time we request that visits are put on a momentary pause until we find out more about their policy on visitations. Unlike the ICU,  he is in a shared room with a roommate. With that in consideration, over the next few weeks we would like to just acclimate to the new facility, schedules, new faces and all of the above. So we ask that everyone please be patient and as we become more familiar. When ready, I would love to talk to anyone who would like to pay him a visit.  

Lastly, I want to say, Thank you again on behalf of our family. The outpouring show of love and support is more than anyone can ask for. If I could, I would give every individual a hug and tell you in person myself how much it all means.

Sokny has not had any major changes since his trach and peg. He has been on sedatives to alleviate his jerking, so that his trach incisions can heal to prepare him for his permanent tube. Almost 2 weeks have passed since surgery and today they decided to move forward with the larger trach. This was only a bedside procedure and all went well. It took about 30 mins from start to finish. Now that his permanent trach is in place, they will begin removing sedatives, re-introduce his nutrition & provide anti-seize medication. 

During this reintroduction phase, they are monitoring him because lately he has been up and down in functional regulation. Vitals are where they should be, but has been having fevers on and off, his body is having some side effects possibly from a combination of medication/nutrition and fighting an infection. Which is nothing we want nor what he needs right now. With that being said, there are new visiting precautions:

•  Gloves, Gown and mask(optional)

It is day by day, so please just be aware when visiting and respectfully just check in with the nurses prior to entering his room. Until Drs. give the okay the answer to “how long” will he remain in the ICU before moving to a skilled nursing facility is unknown. It could be weeks from now or a month, I am unsure. We just need to do our due diligence with being patient and accept that we do not have the answer right now.

Situations like this take time and slowing down is okay. All that matters is he heals to whatever capacity that may be for him. Please continue your prayers and keep thinking positive thoughts. Those combined are a powerful resource that we can provide to him, unconditionally.

We appreciate all the texts, messages, and phone calls—they’ve been very comforting, and we feel the love and concern. We apologize for the recent lack of updates; there hasn’t been much new to share. We will continue to keep everyone informed as information becomes available, though updates may no longer be as frequent as they were before.

Sokny is stable, his vitals from surgery have been staying within range of what the nurses want. He is to remain in his current room until the end of this week because they want to monitor his trach and make sure its stabilized. Hence why he has been sedated since post op. As for end of week, depending on the Dr's. We may need to go back into surgery for another trach, to switch to a larger diameter but thats tbd.

Today was a very big day for Sokny. It was surgery day for his trach and PEG (feeding tube). He was brought into surgery around 2 pm and was back in his original room, 5c3 , around 5 pm. His surgeon said that all went well. In addition there was a 2nd EEG done and also a CT head scan.

• EEG Results: Nothing has really changed since the initial scan he had when he came into the ICU. He has Anoxic brain damage.

• CT Head Scan: This scan showed that his brain structure is ok. Grey and white matter are intact, no major damage. His brain stem is intact as well, which is important for vital function regulation in our bodies. 

 This journey will be a long rough road, yes, but for now let us take all the wins we can one day at a time. Thank you to everyone who prayed and kept him in your thoughts! 

We received call confirmation that Sokny is scheduled for surgery on June 4 @ 12:45pm.

Sokny’s doctor recommended postponing his surgery today. We will hear from the medical team in the coming days to reschedule. Please continue to keep Sokny and his family in your prayers. 

Update:

Sokny was scheduled for surgery, but then it was decided to reschedule, due to the increase in his jerking movements. Overnight nurses had to administer medication every hour just to calm him. After the decision was made to postpone by the surgeon, they began administering propofol back into his drips. They mentioned it could be 1 or 2 days before he could be okay’ed to go into surgery. 

Prior to leaving from our visit, we were able to speak to a neurologist who was examining Sokny to help understand more of what could be happening inside his head. She said that he is in a sort of a comatose state. The reason(s) are to be determined. Could be due to his “seizures”, brain damage or the brain damage is causing the “Seizures” which is then resulting in him constantly being in a state of comatose. Reasons uncertain, but as we have learned. We must be patient.

This update will be a bit short, but I don’t think there needs to be an explanation of why. 

• Tomorrow Sokny will go into surgery for a tracheostomy and feeding tube. 

• A care coordinator was able to connect with the family to discuss what long term care would be for Sokny post surgery. 

Some days are harder than others and that’s just the reality of the journey Sokny is fighting. No matter we will move forward. Please keep him in your thoughts and say a prayer for him, that all goes well during his procedures.

At this time, we ask that any of those that would like to visit, please wait until after his surgery. He may be relocated. I wouldn’t want anyone to try to visit and will be unable to see him. Thank you all for your understanding. 

As we visited today, I was able to run into a few friends from Sokny, which was nice. For those who have not or cannot, do not worry there is plenty of love around Sokny, he is not alone. To those who visited and I was unable to meet, THANK YOU! THANK YOU ALL! With all the love pouring in, I was able to take time to pick up some treats for the nurses in his unit, to show gratitude, for taking care of our big bro. Gratitude is all I feel from this community, so it only feels appropriate.  

Today the PA was able to speak to us as a family and a lot of what was said was similar to previous days:

• Sokny receives daily chest X-Rays so that they can monitor the fluid in his lungs. From the day he arrived until now, it has only gotten worse. Which corresponds with the quality of his heart and its inability to function properly. 

• The sedation medication is out of his system and he is experiencing “seizure like symptoms” which is a negative prognosis.This is reflection of the EEG test and the irreversible brain damage he had suffered.

•  A SCD machine was placed on him, which is a medical device that uses inflatable sleeves to squeeze the legs to stimulate blood flow, since he bed ridden: 

• Per Drs. the way Sokny now, is his baseline health. 

Please keep our family in your prayers and hug one another a bit tighter tonight. 

Sokny looked a bit more peaceful walking into the room today. It was nice and cool, shades were open to let the light come in, he was propped by pillows and tucked in with a blanket. They had just turned him last night to help his skin from developing any sores and replaced his nutrition feed.

While there, we played some music starting with a bit of 2 Pac- Better days & Unconditional love. Followed up with Dove Shack- Summertime in the LBC, Lil Rob- Summer nights and a couple of other songs. Gave him a bit of everything and I think he enjoyed it. Honestly, I should have started rapping, he definitely would have woken up and told me to stop. You can't rap dude.

Any messages left for him were relayed. While reading, I held his hand and made sure to send all the love and energy to him. Hands were nice and warm. 

Overall: No major change from yesterday. They recommend getting together as a family to go over Sokny’s time in the ICU and what are the next steps for him. 

Today’s update is a bit more difficult to write,but here it is:

• They were unable to move forward with the MRI, due to some complications. Because of this they are trying other tests.

• As of this morning, his major medications have been turned off. This is partly due to the amount of time spent in the ICU, 72hrs. This is the current care plan by the doctors in order to see how he will respond, if the seizures will still occur. From what we heard already he has been showing seizure-like movements. This is NOT a good sign. Due to how heavily sedated he was it may take a few days for the medication to exit his body.

• He is running a fever, due to many possible variables like an infection in his lungs, the brain damage causing inability to regulate his body. The reasons are so vast, it's impossible to pinpoint. Tylenol is being provided, fever being monitored. 

• Conversation was had about resuscitate protocols. Since he had undergone 2 cardiac arrests IF he suffers sudden cardiac arrest again, in general, mortality percentages begin to decrease each round for any person. The reason is the lack of oxygen the brain does not receive during cardiac arrest. Sokny has brain damage and that’s a fact, so another round of CPR could be even more damaging.

Because of the brain damage, his neurons are firing at random vs. structured like you and I, in parallel with his heart's inability to meet his body's demand, the kidneys reduced function, him being heavily reliant on ventilation. It is all very HARD for him. 

We must now be patient. Let us all pray a bit harder tonight, let our hope be the guiding light for him to heal and fill your thoughts and dreams of Sokny smiling. That big round face with chunky glasses, sitting on his chubby cheeks and that mole you can spot from a mile away, don’t forget that mole okay?  - With all my heart, Thank you for being here with me and our family.

There have been no changes in his overall condition, this is neither a positive or a negative sign. Even though there were no major changes overall, there are items that I can update everyone on:

• When he was being adjusted for care overnight, he experienced seizure-like movements. 

• They are decreasing his sedation medication to monitor any negative responses, but will increase if seizures are to occur. 

• Due to poor blood flow being supplied from his heart, Kidneys have reduced function. Please notate that reduced function is different from failure. Two separate things.His kidneys still filter, though not optimally

• MRI has BEEN scheduled for May 28, 2026.

After being in critical care for more than 24 hours, tests & imaging done, here is the most up to date of his condition: Sokny is very sick.

• Enlarged heart that is only functioning at half capacity. Typically our hearts work at 60% he is only at 30%. 

• Issues with proper fluid secretion from his body.

• Not responding to physical stimuli, but is responsive to light stimuli.

• Heavily reliant on medication due to brain damage caused by cardiac arrest and not having enough oxygen, confirmed from EEG.

• MRI will be done, if possible, to see more in depth on his internals.

• Suffering from seizures, resulting in heavy sedation.

• Heavily reliant on ventilation support for proper oxygen.

Sokny collapsed and went into sudden cardiac arrest, thankfully individuals were around and CPR was administered while an ambulance arrived for transportation. During the transportation, unfortunately he had experienced another cardiac arrest and was resuscitated for a 2nd time. In total he went without proper heart function for about 45 mins. He then was admitted to the ICU and is under critical care.
